The History Of Kickboxing
Kickboxing is a martial art combining Muay Thai and Karate. Kickboxing was first created and promoted by karate practitioner Tatsuo Yamada and Japanese boxing practitioner Osamu Noguchi in 1950’s. Since there has been a lot of cross-fertilization between these styles, with many practitioners training or competing under the rules of more than one style, the history of the individual styles cannot be seen in isolation from one another. The French term Boxe pieds-poings (literally “feet-fists-boxing”) is also used in the sense of “kickboxing” in the general meaning, including French boxing (savate) as well as American and Japanese kickboxing, Burmese and Thai boxing, any style of full contact karate, etc. Kickboxing came to the United States of America in the 1970’s when the American Karate contestants became annoyed with the stringent rules of martial arts which didn’t involve full contact kicks and punches. However there were no set rules and infrastructure to support this sport until the World Kickboxing Association (USA) came into existence.
